Nothing gets more frustrating or possibly terrifying than the idea of having ants, spiders or any type of creepy crawlie in your tent while you’re trying to enjoy the outdoors, while insects and camping come hand in hand, there are some things you can do to keep them at bay.
CONSUMER REPELLANTS
There are several insect repellants available to consumers from your local supermarket from aerosol based to odour based repellants they will usually have you covered. While there are a lot of concerns about the effect of repellants on the environment, certain developers have tried to make them as eco-friendly as possible. so please read the labelling on the repellant packaging to decide which one is right for you.
AEROSOL BASED
Aerosol based repellants such as Aerogard are great for individual use, as you can apply it directly to skin and depending on the strength can last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. Providing an overall coverage from flying insects and biting insects
ODOUR BASED
Odour based repellants have gotten a lot of traction over the years as they tend to be very eco friendly, however they don’t usually offer an overall coverage and target a specific insect. Sandlewood and Mosquito coils are great odour based repellants, specifically targeting mosquitoes which could be carry a variety of diseases.
NATURAL REPELLANTS
GENERAL INSECT REPELLENTS
Tie up a small bundle of sage leaves and burn them in a bonfire, to keep away bugs and insects. Another alternative is to mix basil essential oil with water in a spray bottle, then spray the solution around your campsite, the window and door frames of your camper trailer.
MOSQUITOES
Slice up limes and push cloves into the lime slices and place on a plate or flat surface. Another alternative is to mix lemon, eucalyptus and citronella essential oils in a spray bottle with some water, and spray the solution on and around you.
SPIDERS
Mix peppermint essential oil with some water in a spray bottle, the less water you use the stronger the repellent. Spray the solution around your campsite, the window and door frames of your camper trailer to repel spiders and make your campsite smell minty fresh.
